City Čadca - english version

Cadca – a town situated on the banks of Kysuca river, is surrounded by mountain ranges of Javorniky and Slovenske Beskydy. Geographicaly, it is an entrance gateway to Slovakia from Poland and Czech republic. The first written record about future town is from 1565. In 1778 Cadca was promoted by queen Maria Therese to town (oppidum) and it was given right to organize markets. Development of the town starts as merchants from near Moravia, Silesia and Poland participate on the markets. The town was built on the crossroads of international routes. Road from Kosice city to Bohumin town connects Cadca with major industrial and business centres of Central Europe. North – south road went through villages of Skalite and Zwardon. In the history of Cadca, there were only few events important for the whole nation. In 1848, during so called ′winter campaign′ of Slovak volunteers fighting for liberty of the nation, Cadca was political and military centre of Slovak uprising.

This event is commemorated by memorial with design of one fighter for liberty. It is situated in the centre of the town, in the place, where the future of Slovak nation was decided.
Today, there is a rich economic, social and cultural life in the town. The greatest advantage for town`s inhabitants and visitors is surrounding nature, interesting landscape and lovely quiet forests. Hills around the town are ideal for hiking and cycling trips during summer and a paradise for winter sports ` lovers during cold months. Velka Raca, ski centre in Oscadnica village, is the most popular among tourists for down-hill skiing. White ski paths starting there end in many directions. Well-known and favourite is Kysuce ski path. Fitness centre and swimming pool offer its clients indoor sport activities. Visitors can keep fit on the tennis courts or explore hills and valleys riding a horse. Very nice and interesting is a walk to locality called Megonky. It is a place of natural and world geological phenomenon. Huge stone spheres with diameter of 0.3 m to 2.6 m are still partly inside of the rock. This place was proclaimed a natural monument.
